Vleesmeester Brewery
Vleesmeester Brewery was born in 2010, when 3 friends (Tom Wuyts,
Tom Van der Veken and Kevin Thys) -after years of visiting beer festivals-
decided to start making beer themselves. The purchase of a
brewing starter kit was realized and the brewing could begin.
Because some people from our circle of acquaintances became curious about
what we were up to in the kitchen, they regularly came to visit. While grinding, these scoundrels thought that
we were making beer in a meat grinder. They wondered if we were not
meat masters instead of brewers? So we thought it would be fun to call ourselves,
as a joke, Vleesmeester Brewery. A
friend who works as a layout artist at a well-known magazine made a
logo for us and so it happened.
Fascinated by the lesser-known beers from the craft beer scene,
we started experimenting hard. Our preference quickly went to
the hoppy beers, so our first creations were mainly IPAs and
Russian Imperial Stouts. One brew was more successful than the other, in short, with trial and error.
Gradually, loyalists – who were initially averse to the
beers that were too bitter for them – started to find the necessary appreciation for our
creations. In 2014, we were asked by a few friends, who play in the
Antwerp metal band “Your Highness”, to design a beer especially for the release
of their new album. This became the beer “Hoogheid”.
Not much later, the beer “Bittere Bloemen” was added to the range
and in 2016 the “Jour de Fête” followed. This completed the hop trilogy. Three different hoppy beers with different
alcohol percentages and each with their own character. All these beers were tested several times in the brewing kit and subsequently made on a larger scale at the Anders brewery.
In the meantime, we had been dreaming for quite some time about our own brewery where we could experiment on a larger scale. For this, we searched for a long time for a location that was also suitable for housing a tasting room. In 2018, we found this in the old rectory of Edegem. At that time, Bart Struyf (guitarist of Your Highness) joined the Vleesmeesters. Kevin and Bart had been dreaming of their own cultural café for years, and so these two dreams finally came together in the Hoogmis.
Since August 2019, our own brewery (5HL) has been a fact. The ideal playground for our new beers! In addition to being a brewery, we are also still a beer company and, for logistical reasons, we still have our beers made on a larger scale at the Anders brewery.
