Master brewer with heart and soul in the smallest brewery in Franconia
Motor oil, cucumber gose and whiskey doppelbock are just some of the extraordinary craft beer creations from the Hertl brewery, the smallest brewery in Franconia. Here, David Hertl creates flavor bombs that not only fascinate beer connoisseurs.
David Hertl is currently Germany’s youngest master brewer and beer sommelier as well as an aspiring wine sommelier. At the age of 22, he completed his master’s training before continuing his part-time training to become a beer sommelier. 26-year-old David Hertl is currently aiming for a wine sommelier certificate, which he expects to hang next to his master’s certificate in mid-2017. In 2013 he became self-employed and opened his own brewery, the Braumanufaktur. He discovered his passionate interest in brewing as a teenager. The first beer experiments in Mom’s kitchen led to the former pigsty on her parents’ farm being quickly converted into a miniature brewery. On 80 square meters, the charismatic young brewer already produces around 80 hectoliters of the finest beer, and the trend is rising: a new brewhouse and other equipment are intended to significantly boost production, as demand for David Hertl’s barley juice specialties is increasing.
