From their native city of Chicago, owners Stephen Heilman and Alison Curry decided it was time for a change and saw Charleston for the market it has grown to be. Curry has background in sales, and spirits have always been in Heilman’s blood. Back in the Whiskey Rebellion days, the early 1800s, his family had owned and operated a distillery in Pennsylvania. His genealogy even dates back to the Mayflower, relating to John Alden, the ships Cooper. It only made sense that a city rich in history- and high foot traffic-was the perfect place to start bringing his lineage back to life.
Enticed by the revelation that his ancestors had once been involved in the distilling, Stephen decided to migrate from his career as a commodities trader and immerse himself in the flourishing craft distilling industry. Discovering two German custom-built copper stills ignited the business and they set forth on creating Charleston Distilling Company. Embracing the atmosphere and resources of Charleston, Curry and Heilman are committed to creating South Carolina certified products, using all South Carolina-based grain and sourcing everything from the state they now call home. With their heritage in mind, Charleston Distilling Company wanted to approach distilling in a new light: master the old practice, but refine and redefine.
Five years later, high demand proved to be too much for the current space and equiment, causing Charleston Distilling to move over to John’s Island, where they can produce up to 12x more product and focus on distribution. Set opening date is September 2019.
